Chickpeas help you lose weight, prevent heart disease and control diabetes, while white beans are a good source of vegetable protein and promote healthy digestion.

Ingredients

To prepare the chakalaka, 4 people need:

  • 1 red bell pepper and 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
  • 1 piece fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 2 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 200 g white beans
  • 200 g chickpeas
  • ½ bunch chopped coriander
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • salt and pepper

Preparation of Chakalaka

  1. Heat the olive oil in a casserole dish, add the onion and diced peppers and cook for 5 minutes, then add the garlic and ginger and cook for 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
  2. Add the chopped tomato, tomato paste, curry powder, chili pepper, salt and pepper, then 20 cl water, and simmer for 20 minutes over medium heat.
  3. Add the coriander to the pot, along with the chickpeas and beans, mix well, check and adjust the seasoning if necessary, then simmer for around 20 minutes.

Once you’re ready, you can enjoy your chakalaka hot or cold.
